Creative Space Activation that Compliments the Ongoing Transformation of Salisbury Main Street’s District
September 24, 2026 | Logan Breer
Salisbury Main Street’s board knew that their downtown wasn’t the most inviting, attractive, and safest place for shoppers, residents, business owners, and visitors. While they had been working to revitalize their community, they were still missing beautification efforts such as properly painted and designated crosswalks as well as attractive landscaping
When Salisbury Main Street won the 2025 Creative Space Activation Grant, everything changed. They now had a check for $10,000 to enhance their Main Street district along Broadway with painted crosswalks, curb extensions, and greenery, making Salisbury Main Street a vibrant place for all ages.
People Gather in Safe and Attractive Places
From July 2025 to June 2026, Salisbury Main Street worked to implement their streetscape beautification project to make their downtown safer and more attractive for people of all ages. Main Street volunteers and other community members worked together to:
- Paint the parking spots that run down the center of Broadway Street.
- Paint “brick” crosswalks at each intersection.
- Upgrade the landscaping of their permanent planters around their lighting fixtures.
- Added removable landscaped curb extensions.
With these additions, residents and visitors can now cross Broadway with confidence in a clearly marked crosswalk and know that oncoming traffic is driving slower and will see them as a result of the narrowed streets at the intersection. Additionally, with enhanced visuals from the landscaping, shoppers have more incentive to come spend time on Salisbury’s Main Street rather than picking up a quick coffee from a convenience store; residents have a reason to be proud of their community; and business owners have the visual proof that Salisbury Main Street is serious about them opening their business on Broadway.
The Domino Effect of Investment
Since completing the project, Salisbury Main Street has already seen business owners investing in Salisbury and their properties by decorating the sidewalks outside their doors. This is one of many positive impacts that investment can make as it starts a chain reaction that continues to grow.
On top of current business owners taking notice, new business owners are more likely to act on the thought, “I’ve always wanted to open my restaurant here,” by meeting with Main Street and the local bank to discuss how to make their business dreams a reality.
Looking Ahead
Salisbury joins Liberty, Delmar, and Brookfield as Creative Space Activation Grant recipients that have transformed underutilized spaces into thriving community assets. Glasgow is now starting their journey as the 2026 Creative Space Activation Grant recipient, check back in 2027 to see what Glasgow accomplished.
Salisbury Main Street is a reminder that a small project can make a big difference, as it demonstrates that things are happening, instilling confidence in community members, entrepreneurs, investors, business owners, and building owners.
