20th Anniversary: Impact That Talks – Michael Donovan

Michael Donovan and Logan Breer | September 30, 2026

As Executive Director for the Missouri Arts Council (MAC), what is the importance of art for local economies and people?

Both our economies and our people thrive when they exist in creative, culturally rich communities. The arts are uniquely suited to strengthen education, build vibrant neighborhoods, and spark local economic growth. This shared belief is at the very heart of why the Missouri Arts Council and Missouri Main Street Connection (MMSC) work so beautifully together.

What was your first impression of the Main Street movement and Gayla?

I vividly remember meeting Gayla and her staff at a MMSC gathering. I was immediately struck by their passion for vibrant communities, historic preservation, and dynamic downtowns. They deeply understood the importance of culture, and they truly appreciated the power of good design. It was instantly obvious to me that these were ‘our people.’ It is incredibly easy to support and get swept up in Gayla’s remarkable vision and energy.

Has the partnership between MAC and MMSC been beneficial in your eyes?

Well, over the past 10 years my role has expanded in ways I couldn’t have imagined when I was first hired. I have been able to develop resources for our communities and apply for millions of dollars of grants that support the work we do. I love seeing how each Main Street community takes the Main Street Approach™ and makes it work for their community. I also love seeing all the local history across the entire state. To be able to provide support and assistance for the community members achieving this work locally is a great pleasure.

What do you enjoy about MAC attending MMSC’s annual conference?

We have found that attending the annual conference is the best way to engage directly with Missouri’s vital local communities. The attendees are enthusiastic to learn about our funding opportunities, and our one-on-one consulting appointments have become highly popular, filling up quickly. There is simply no better way for us to understand local needs and match them with our resources. Every year, we walk away deeply inspired by the passion of the people we meet there.

Do you see a way that local arts organizations and local main street organizations can partner to support each other?

Without a doubt, local Main Street programs are vital partners for the arts. While a Main Street design committee isn’t a permanent substitute for a dedicated, community-wide arts council, it can absolutely pave the way for one to grow. At the same time, an arts council can never replace the specific, commercial vitality that a Main Street program brings. They are natural allies. When local Main Streets and arts organizations speak with one voice, city councils and local citizens see a cohesive, inspiring vision for community growth.
